Avanti West Coast Delays Extend Into Second Day After Critical Power Outage at Manchester Control Hub
MANCHESTER, England — Thousands of long-distance passengers face ongoing travel chaos on Friday as Avanti West Coast and regional operators struggle to recover from a major electrical blackout at the Manchester Rail Operating Centre (ROC).
The critical outage, which struck shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, temporarily disabled signalling and communications across the North West and Midlands. Although primary power was restored within seconds by grid suppliers, the momentary voltage drop tripped safety protocols, forcing regional signals to fail-safe to red and bringing hundreds of trains to an immediate halt.

Widespread Fleet and Crew Displacement
Network Rail confirmed that while signalling controls have been rebooted and verified, major knock-on delays will persist through Friday afternoon. Because trains were immobilised on open track during Thursday’s peak hours, dozens of Avanti West Coast Pendolino and Evero train sets ended the day out of position. Additionally, many drivers and onboard crew members exceeded their maximum legal shift hours while stranded, causing initial Friday morning departures from London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly, and Liverpool Lime Street to be delayed or cancelled.
“Our engineers worked tirelessly overnight to restore primary systems,” said Chris Wright, Network Rail’s North West route director. “However, due to the volume of displaced stock and crew across the region, passengers should expect continued disruption and check live journey updates before traveling.”

Avanti West Coast has relaxed ticket restrictions across affected routes to assist travelers caught in the backlog:

Unused Ticket Validity: Passengers holding unused tickets dated Thursday, August 6, can use them on any Avanti West Coast service throughout Friday, August 7, at no additional charge.

Refunds and Compensation: Travelers whose services were cancelled or delayed by 15 minutes or more remain eligible for full fee-free refunds or compensation through the Delay Repay scheme.
